MCM – How crowded can it get

I can’t remember how many times I have been to MCM now but I have been going for quite a few years now with my friend Tor. I remember meeting some amazing people, breaking world records and seeing some amazing panels yet this year is different.

Queues at MCM

This year I remember crowds, crowds, more crowds and more fun gossiping in the car park. That is right, there was more fun in just gossiping with my friends in the car park as it was possible to talk and not feel squished.

So with them increasing the size of the hall every year but the crowds flocking to this geek fest, what is the future of this once incredible event? Due to the crowds and the size you can’t go to talks and see all the stands in one day!

My Little Pony cosplay at MCM

Previous years there were the likes of Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, Matt Smith and David Tennant suddenly making an appearence but with the crowds it would be difficult for them to come without incident. I still love the idea of an event to go to with other geeks but no longer do you get to talk and meet so I think to SFX and wonder if this is the future?

After hearing that someone lost their eye to a sonic screwdriver last year due to two posing/dueling for photos and problems with safety, do I really want to be going somewhere that is less fun and more just a stressful shopping trip for all my geeky needs.

Will I just be stuck to buying my geeky stuff online and going to much smaller events?

Maybe! Or I’ll just stick with SFX weekender!

Retro Game craving

I have recently purchased a brand new PS3 (I know very late behind everyone else) and now rather than a craving of new and wonderfully flashy games, I just want to play retro games! I actually blame the PS3 for this as it has a Lemmings theme that reminded me of the wonderful pleasure I had of playing the game as a kid when it first came out. I still remember the sound of the music in the room and the pixel graphics, and have fond memories of it all.
So after 4 days of managing to refrain from playing, I caved and now have the retro game cravings! I want to play the games that made me first fall in love with console and PC games. Those games that you remember as a kid and though can can’t remember the name, you never forget the fun or the characters.

I now am on the hunt for my earthworm jim disc and ‘where in the world is Carmen” game so that I can relive my gaming youth!

So what are your retro games? What was the first game that got you fixed to your computer?

By the way, if you want to play lemmings, you can do it here: Have fun!

I’m still scared of creepers

I am ashamed to say it, but creepers still scare the life out of me when I play minecraft.

I can’t help it, but the fact that they blow up, make a hissing noise and chase me is enough to have me wanting to hide!

It makes the game exciting but I am still terrified of them. Even playing the sound when I wasn’t playing the game puts the fear in me!

I will just have to be brave… and actually fight one one day!

So does it scare you too?

15 years ago tv changed

15 years ago, TV as we know it changed with Buffy reaching our screens. It is hard to think of my teenage years without Buffy there throughout! And its impact is still evident.

It is strange to think of the excitement of waiting for the series to start, with the saddness of the finale as we waved goodbye to these characters we fell in love with.

It was great to have a show that from the outset that there was death of “main characters” so from week to week, there was no expectation of everyone pulling through. It had the ability to deal with the taboos of teenage life too, sex, love friendship, popularity yet in a fun and often scary manner.

It is great to see it has continued in a great graphic novel series, but I still miss the excitement and thrill that awaited me each week.

I do feel old with it being 15 years since it aired, though buffy didn’t hit the UK screens till 1998/1999, it still shows me age! I rememeber watching buffy from the start of secondary school right till the end of my GCSE’s.

I know there are probably many young people who have not seen it, but know of it as a classical (and I suggest they watch it). While they have Glee in their lives to try and deal with many issues, it still doesn’t have the same standing as this horror classic that changed our TV. I mean there was “All the small things” before Glee, and it hasn’t changed other shows! But Buffy did and still does.

So in 30 years time, there will still be people looking back to when it started with fond memories. I just wonder how many other shows will have that same reaction!

New design – Purpose gaming website

After the success of the brand creation for Purpose Gaming, today I finished the design work for the website for now.

The red and black theme has continued, with a very grungy and yet clean design that goes with the branding. It will be exciting to see if people like the new look, and will give Purpose a chance to start working on his streaming and writing again!

There is still quite a way to go before the page is finished, as Purpose now needs to work his SOE magic so more people will find it.

Why not check out the page now and tell me what you think at

How to play Minecraft as a noob

I love minecraft, yet I am terrible at it, so as long as you don’t do the mistakes I often do, you will be fine.

So here is my tips on how to play this wonderful game as a noob.

  1. Don’t squeal like a girl and panic
I squeal; I sqeak; I panic; I run into walls. Panic makes you do silly things, and giving your other half an ear ache is not going to help when you rely on them to tell you what that green thing is running towards you, or remind you not to look into the purple eyes. If you are of a jumpy nature, try to make sure you always have a good and easy get out plan and not a narrow ledge that you make you fall further into a pit of darkness or off a cliff to your death.
  2. Dont get stuck out of stupidity
After opening a new world I could not find coal. While this may not seem a big deal, it is as you can make torches. That made it difficult, but I got stuck in a hill when the sun went down as I dug into a hill kept digging with no light and now can not get out. I have since had to start a new account. So stuck without torches? Quickly make a door then you can see something so you know where the exit is and when to get out! With only the need of wood to make it as well, it is very easy to make, especially as a noob!
  3. Don’t use wooden picks
It is great when you start using a pick, and the wooden ones are great for starting out with nothing, but as soon as you have used the wooden pick to get some cobblestone, make cobblestone picks. If you stick with a wooden one and find that little bit of coal in the area, you won’t get the coal that you vitally need, but a hole where it once was! The same is for iron, gold and diamond; you need to right pick to mine then, whether iron, gold or diamond.
  4. Remember to sleep
What I didn’t realise was that by sleeping you save your location, so a house with a bed and emergency supply of items in a chest is a great way to not go back to square one. It also means you get to miss the scary evenings with the scary monsters that make terrifying noises!
  5. When you see a creeper, green walking thing, RUN as they explode!
The best advice I can give is to run from these scary things, as they explode and leave a lovely crater when they explode in the morning sun! Try not to take them on or you’ll end up back with nothing again, or scream and give the bf a headache…
  6. Have fun!
Minecraft is a great game, where you can explore towns, caves dungeons and build great buildings, homes and memories. Enjoy it and when your not enjoying it any more, try a new world or play with someone else!

I hope you have enjoyed my Minecraft how to play as  noob. Hopefully I will have more for you soon!

Valentines fun

Today, as everyone is well aware, is Valentine’s day. It is also one of my friend’s birthday (Happy birthday Michael!).

If your single and not a player today is hell, with the vivid reminder of your single status! If your in a relationship your expected to either expect being treated by your other half or to treat your partner.

Today I am happy in a relationship with an incredible man, but I don’t feel like he has to make a special day of it as every day is special.

Though he offered a night out in a resturant, I would rather just curl up.

I know I am a n00b at being in a relationship with him, as this is our first valentines, but here are some sure fire ways to not muck up with a girl on this pressured day of gift giving

  1. Make your own card
Yes it can be easy to just buy a card, but if you are geeky, or have a personal joke you can really make something special. One example is this amazng Tardis Card! Though not everyone has creative skills, you could always just do an XKCD styled card
  2. Order flowers to randomly turn up at her work
Today all the buzz was about Jen’s surprise flowers! They were not only beautiful, but also a lovely surprise, which for Jen with her long distance realtionship was a nice way to show he was thinking about her. Want to save money? Do as Sam planned, take an early afternoon and turn up your self with flowers.
  3. Surprise her!
Girl’s love being surprised! Even if it is a little surprise, hand made food or petals on the bed, she will swoon 🙂 (though do check before hand if she likes surprises…)
  4. Use an in-joke
In-joke gifts are sweet and cute and sometimes don’t have to cost much at all! With us playing League of Legends, the little bottles of Mana and Health potions were amazing! I still haven’t stopped grinning 🙂
  5. Do everything she wants
Sorry guys, but if she’s not into video games, then don’t play them! Focus on her and on doing something together. If your lucky, and she wants nothing but a good game of LOL, then great! Otherwise, sorry guys, but you might have to slog through some girly chic flick…

Hopefully those hints will help! To celerate our Valentine’s, we’re off to watch House with indian food 🙂

In other news, I have a tumblr that you can find here

La noire – game review

I love the 20’s-40’s; the design styles and music are incredible. When LA noire came out all of my friends could do nothing but recommend this game for me. What’s more, the whole game being an epic story made up of cases, each with their own stories, its my kind of game.

This is not a shooter game, with more focus on investigation than violence.

The witty remarks from characters, how the smaller storylines change depending on what evidence you find or questions you ask is great. I can’t help but be hooked to the game.

If you like games that aren’t just about reckless shooting or driving, bit has real depth, this is the game for you. But a hint, if you have evidence then say lie, if not doubt! That’s all I’m saying!

Now back to playing! Just solved the lipstick murder!

SFX weekender 3 – Day one blog

I love SFX weekenders. There seems to be an ease about the place as everyone is able to geek out without confused looks constantly.

After an entertaining Thursday night (thank goodness for early entry!), the whole day was just a wash of fun geek filled plans. Well till I smelt fry up like the horde who’d been partying late into the night.

One of the best things about the weekend has to be the chance to talk to real artists and authors. Being stuck in a queue for breakfast behind Tony Lee and Dan was the best queue I have ever been in!

After joyful giggles, food and opening ceremony, Sylvester Mc Coy’s talk, minus Sophie due to the train derailment, in the big void. What a talk! After a few brief minutes on stage, he was buzzing through the crowds, roaming with the microphone.

Not only did people get to directly ask him their questions, but Sylvester suddenly surprised people with conversations with babies, break outs into songs and an inability to remain still. Saying nothing of the Hobb..*Muffle* other than New Zealand being beautiful, still left a streak of excitement for the upcoming film with Sylvester’s perscence.

Slipping through the throngs of crowds and making our way to the screening room, I had an hour of giggles at Tony and Dan’s awesome hour of comic book making. SFX weekender has significantly grown, and this hour proved it further. Last year I had attended the book making hour, but strolling through the busy pub, the intimacy of last year was evidently gone.

Dan and Tony’s hour was one of the few with attendee participation, with them pulling up people to play out their comic. The terror on Tony’s face after choosing the villian was epic, with his fear of being beaten to a pulp for what he was about to ask this guy giving the audience alot of giggles. As always, the pair ended the comic with a twist, forcing two of the guys to kiss as the final aspect of their comic.

The charity auction was the next stop for me and my gang, with Becky, though vowing at the start, having the highest bid of the whole auction! Aid and the guys really got excited as the figures grew higher, with the finaly total doubling the original target!

Just a minute, the funnest thing I have seen at an SFX weekender, followed and was the only event where I couldn’t photograph as I was laughing so much. If you haven’t heard the game before, they had a topic to not hesitate, repeat or meander off the topic set. Problem was, the panel taking part seemed to try and create their own rules, buzzing in when bored, or for increased humour value. I only hope that they repeat this event next year! It will be on my to do list!

The train derailment meant that Anthony Head was no longer appearing, so it was back to the rooms for food to be energised for the now famous Blastermind Quiz. This quiz was epically hard! I think out of all the questions, I managed to answer 10 of them! Any I had no clue was an excuse to yell “Trevor” as the “answer” as my team answered our way into 20th place. The success was greatly celecrated that night!

I stuck my head in to the end of the imagionarium, with lighting, magic, illusions and beautiful costumes filling the stage. The fire tricks had to be my favourite aspect though, with the chance to play with my new camera to get some great photos.

If it weren’t for a pesky head injury 7 years ago, I would have stayed for Pat Sharps session on the decks, but the lights and noise were too much for my head. If you do ever get the chance though, SFX weekenders are great, as the 51 troop girls doon their fantastic outfits of lights and sparks.

The day was incredible and it just made the next, with Brian Blessed, so much more exciting.

If you want to see more photos, you can see them here

A sad farewell till the next sfx weekender

This years sfx weekender was a folly of delights, witty remarks and incredible costumes. It is sad that it has ended, but excitement already, for booking has already begun for number 4.

Having panels with Brian Blessed, Eve meryres, Sylvester Mc Coy and Colin baker does make it harder for the team to plan the awesome event for next years.

Though pointins and their staff were the cause for almost all of the issues, with little the sfx crew could do to stop! One thing is clear, the staff were slow, daft and very rude, and I feel sad that the sfx guys had to deal with them more than us.

The weekend however was incredible, and the laughs had where great.

My biggest issue? The lady dressed as a female 6th doctor, not with our group, who groped my noob. Whoever you are, make sure you don’t do this in future, as I hope the next person has the balls to report you, you sexual fend.

The reason I feel so much about this, is I have been assaulted before, so it brought back memories, but also the trust is broken. In conventions there usually seemed to be an unwritten rule of trust and respect, allowing for people to feel safe in dressing up. I wasn’t even dressed slutty however, and made it clear she was just after boobage!

But, as I must, I will look to the incredible (and avoid her in future)

So bring on mcm expo in May!
